  1. Downtown Northampton Subway shop up and running; Mayor Narkewicz attends grand opening

Owner Matt Baca already runs a Subway in the city&aposs Florence neighborhood. NORTHAMPTON — A Subway sandwich shop is now open for business at 193 Main St., and Mayor David J. Narkewicz was on hand for the grand opening party Tuesday afternoon. "It's going to mean 10 to 15 jobs, and a storefront that could have been vacant for a while is being filled. The owner is making a significant investment in our downtown," said the mayor, as workers in polo shirts and visor caps started to crank out the store's first-ever foot-longs. Owner Matt Baca, who also owns a Subway in the city's Florence neighborhood, said the sandwich shop will be open until 10 p.m. on most nights, and until midnight on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. "We may even go for late nights, and stay open until one on the weekends. We'll see how it goes," he said. When news broke in August that a Subway would open downtown, some Northampton residents complained on Facebook.com that it would detract from Main Street because it is a "corporate franchise." Narkewicz said Tuesday that shouldn't matter: "We have lots of national chains that co-exist really well, and our local businesses do just fine. I think it's just part of the universe that is downtown." Narkewicz noted that Main Street already hosts a Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts. "You know, it's really on me," Baca added. "This shop is not a big corporation. It's an individually-owned franchise." Adina Edgett will be the store's daily manager. She has worked for Baca for five years, and said she's excited to see the store up and running on Main Street. "It's beautiful here," she said. As for those upset about a franchise operating on Main Street, Edgett said they should come on in and have a sandwich. "People won't complain when they get affordable, quick, delicious food," she said. Steve Baca, who identified himself as "the dad," had words of praise for his son Matt. "He's a good boy; ambitious and hard-working. That's what it's all about." The new Subway is at the location of the FULL ARTICLE AT MassLive.com
